Our Classroom Economy System
This year I will be implementing a new classroom management strategy using a classroom economy. A classroom economy system can help students practice money management, focus on job responsibilities and reward students in a meaningful way.
How Does it All Work?
In our classroom, students will be trained on all of the jobs by watching me do each job the first week of school. In order for students to best learn the jobs, I will model for them while explaining what I am doing and why it is important. Each job card will also have a checklist of tasks to help students complete the jobs effectively.
How are Students Hired?
In our classroom, jobs will be rotated either weekly or monthly, depending on the complexity of the job. The long-term jobs are more complex, pay more money and require the demonstration of responsibility and respect on a consistent basis. For example, a librarian's job will last longer than a board eraser's job because the job is more challenging and requires more time and patience to complete. In order to be hired for the long-term jobs, students will complete a job application listing their qualifications. I will keep these applications so I know who to hire when these important positions rotate each month.
How will Student's Earn the Cash?
Once jobs have been assigned and students are trained, students will be paid for completing their jobs every Friday at the end of the day. At this time, I will also rotate weekly jobs to the next available student. Students will collect their money on Monday and read their new job card for the week. Students can keep their money in their "wallet" which will be kept in their cubby.
How can Student's Spend Their Money?
Now, what can they do with all of this hard-earned cash? At the beginning of the year, the class and I will have a discussion on class passes that they would like to earn with their money. I will take this list and create a Class Pass Menu. Each pass will hold a dollar amount. Every other Friday, students may purchase passes with their money! Students may use their passes any day that they would like, but, if the passes are lost, students will not be given a new pass. It will be their responsibility to hold onto them!
I hope that you are as excited as I am to try out this new system!!
